BVB Case Study

BVB connects tram wear data with predictive maintenance in SAP

Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe needed one system to monitor safety relevant wheelset parameters, integrate measurement data from several suppliers and trigger maintenance actions through SAP APM and SAP S/4HANA.

Real case

What BVB had to solve before predictive maintenance

Green city tram at an urban station for public transportation and mobility services
Multiple measurement systems

BVB needed to connect measurement systems from different suppliers.

Safety relevant parameters

Wheel flange and wheelset data had to be monitored against technical limits.

Master data structure

The setup needed reliable asset data for predictive maintenance.

SAP process connection

Measured values had to trigger maintenance actions in SAP.

Our point of view

How BVB turns rail measurements into SAP actions

1

Laser measurement
Wheelset and wheel flange parameters are captured by measurement systems.

2

Data transfer
The data is passed through the Plant Connectivity Server.

3

SAP APM evaluation
SAP APM monitors actual values against warning limits.

4

Forecasting
A conservative forecast supports proactive maintenance planning.

5

SAP notification
If limits are reached, SAP can trigger the maintenance process.

The Transformation

From measured wear data to
SAP based maintenance control.

FAQ

Questions enterprise leaders ask before they commit.

The goal was to increase the maximum runtime of tram bogies by using measured wear data for maintenance planning. BVB wanted to monitor wheelset and wheel flange parameters in SAP and use this data to support maintenance decisions
The implemented setup uses SAP Asset Performance Management and CAP. Measurement data is processed through the Plant Connectivity Server and connected with SAP S/4HANA.
The use case focuses on wear parameters at the tram bogie, wheelset and wheel flange. These values are safety relevant because they affect rail guidance and technical wear limits.
SAP APM evaluates measured values against defined warning limits. When an actual value reaches a warning limit, the setup supports maintenance follow up through SAP.
Laser measurement systems capture the wheelset data. The values are transferred into the SAP landscape, checked against warning limits and can support the creation of SAP maintenance notifications.
Public transport operators depend on safe, reliable and predictable vehicle availability. Connecting wear data with SAP helps maintenance teams plan work based on asset condition instead of relying only on fixed intervals.
